He grew to manhood on the farm, and was educated in the rate schools. After his marriage he located in Hanover township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and soon afterward moved to McLean County, Illinois, remaining there until 1859, when he returned to Hanover township, and for some years was engaged in general farming and stock raising. In 1885 he was seized with rheumatism, and this unwelcome companion obliged him to almost retire from active farm work. Mr. Barbour was gifted with a good memory.
In politics he has been a lifelong Democrat.

Her mother died when she was an infant, and she was reared to womanhood by an aunt, Eleanor Hill, of Paris, Pennsylvania.
