After the wife and mother died, he and his six sons all enlisted for service in the Civil war at the same time, joining the army at New Castle, Pennsylvania. All the sons were killed at the battle of Culpeper Court House, and the father subsequently lived in Irwin Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania.
