He was a farmer and stone-mason, and in early life followed his trade. He purchased land in what is now Washington Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, in 1799, and settled and remained there until his death, which occurred when he was then ninety-seven years old.

He was the father of five daughters and five sons.
