He was reared in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, and attended the public schools of that place. He married and settled on a farm in Ross township. In 1886 he purchased a farm in Jackson township, Butler County, upon which he settled the same year. He was a Republican, in politics, and was a leading member of the German Lutheran church, of Zelienople.
