He read medicine and engaged in active practice about 1828. He met with good success at the different points at which he located. After sixty years of continuous practice he retired from his chosen profession and passed the evening of a well-spent life at Blairsville, Pennsylvania. [BHCWC, 495]

He was brought from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, to Westmoreland County, in 1812. In 1832 he came to Blairsville. He had a varied career, for beginning as a carpet and coverlet weaver he developed into a merchant and operated a draying business, and in his spare moments taught school. Being very ambitious, he began reading medicine and was graduated from Franklin Medical College, and practiced the profession for the remainder of his life.

He came to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, after the War of 1812. As a young man, Martin L. Miller taught school, serving as the fifth teacher in the community of Blairsville before the public school law was passed. He also practiced the weaving trade, which he had learned under the tutelage of his older brother (the coverlets he made were intricate and beautiful, table linen and cloth also), and he later operated a grocery store and drug store successively. As a physician, he got his first training under Dr. Edward P. Emerson, first physician in Blairsville, and then matriculated at the Franklin Medical College in Philadelphia, from which he was graduated in 1848. He originally established himself in practice at Centerville, but after remaining there a year returned to Blairsville, where he continued for the rest of his life.
He was among the founders of the Blairsville Academy in 1846, served as a member of the Borough Council for several terms, was an organizer of the Blairsville National Bank, and was one of the incorporators of the Blairsville Cemetery. Though he had been a member of the Presbyterian Church, he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856, in which he was granted an exhortor's license in 1867, and served as trustee for many years.
