He grew to manhood under the parental roof, and was educated in the schools of Chartiers township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, then taking the freshman and sophomore years at Washington and Jefferson College.
After his marriage, he bought the old homestead, consisting of 150 acres of land. He then carried on general farming, including the raising of Holstein cattle and Delaine Merino sheep.
He was a Republican, and in religious connection he and his wife were members of the Chartiers U. P. Church, of which he was elected ruling elder in 1886.
