He commenced working in boyhood for his uncle, Enoch Varnum, and worked on his farm for several years, and then went into the oil fields and continued in that business until February 18, 1864. On that date he enlisted in Company H, One Hundred and Second Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served until the close of the war, being discharged in June, 1865. He was wounded at the battle of the Wilderness, also at Cedar Creek. On his return from the army he purchased his own farm, and engaged in farming, fruit growing and trucking.
