General Notes: Husband - John Baney

He is probably a member of the Peter Beany family that lived in the Lebanon-Dauphin County area of Pennsylvania although no connection has been determined. DKM, 1987.

He first appears in Centre Township, Union County (now part of Snyder County), Pennsylvania about 1817. There he met and married Susannah. He and his family moved to Venango County in 1825 and first settled in Sugarcreek Township, near Cooperstown.
Because of ill health, George and Isaac worked the farm for their father until they enlisted in the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War. For a few years after his sons went off to war, John worked the farm as best he could. Shortly before the end of the war, John's daughter and son-in-law, Susannah and Henry Ross moved onto the farm. While John was able to continue to do light work around the farm, some carpentry, and "to work the corn," Henry farmed the place for John "on shares." In the most profitable year for the farm while Henry worked it, John got as his share two hundred and fifty bushels of grain and enough hay to winter his two cows and horse. This would have brought at least one hundred dollars and perhaps more. In that year the farm yielded him about three-fourths of the crop. At that time, John was physically able to do "about a half days labor of a full hand."
