General Notes: Husband - John Duff Patty

He was educated at the common schools of his native place and Delmont Academy. He left the academy at the age of sixteen to enlist in the Union army, served until the close of the war, when he entered and graduated from the Harrisburg School of Commerce. He enlisted in Company K, Two Hundred and Eleventh Pennsylvania Regiment of Volunteers, September, 1864, and served until the cessation of hostilities. He was wounded at the storming of Petersburg, but remained with his command until the surrender of Lee at Appomattox. He participated in the following engagements: Bermuda Hundreds, November, 1864; Hatcher's Run, February, 1865; Fort Stedman, March 25, 1865; Petersburg, April 2, 1865; and in several skirmishes. At the time of the surrender of Lee he was sent to Washington, and January 2, 1865, was honorably discharged by an order from the war department.
After his return to civil life Mr. Patty was engaged as clerk in a hardware store in Pittsburgh for about a year. He then learned the trade of a blacksmith and machinist, and followed these occupations until 1883. In May, 1885, he was appointed postmaster at Delmont, and served in this capacity until 1890, when he resigned to engage in the insurance and real estate business. He was elected to the office of justice of the peace, February 19, 1891, being the first Republican to hold that office in his town. He resigned to accept a clerical position in the Treasury Department of Pennsylvania at Harrisburg, and was there employed for seven years and four months. He then returned to Delmont and resumed the insurance business.
Fraternally Mr. Patty held membership in Carmel Lodge, No. 542, I. O. O. F., in which he was past grand master and served as recording secretary for more than fifteen years. He was a member of the G. A. R. Post No. 4, Latrobe, and William McKinley Lodge, K. P. In church relations he was in accord with the Presbyterian faith.
