He received a common school education, and was reared on his father's farm. He afterwards worked for his father for five years, then settled on a rented farm which he carried on for two years. In 1881 he purchased a homestead of 100 acres in Clay township, Butler County, located on it and became one of the successful farmers of the community. The family was connected with the United Presbyterian church, and in politics, Mr. Mershimer was an ardent Democrat.
