General Notes: Husband - Col. Hugh Mercer

His mother survived his father about ten years, and during that time made an indelible impression of her own excellence of character upon that of her son. He was educated at William and Mary college, in Virginia, during its palmiest days, while under the charge of Bishop Madison. For a long series of years he was colonel of the militia of his native county (Spottsylvania, VA), and for twenty years he was an active magistrate. For five consecutive years he represented his district in the Virginia legislature, when, preferring the sweets of domestic life to the turmoils of politics and public office, he declined a re-election. He was soon afterward chosen president of the branch bank of Virginia, located at Fredericksburg, and held that situation until his death. Throughout his long life Colonel Mercer enjoyed almost uninterrupted health until a short time before his departure. "He was one of the few noble specimens of the Virginia gentleman of the old school."
