General Notes: Husband - Orange Judd Mechling

He spent his youth upon the home farm and in boyhood was a public school student. In the year 1886 he went west to the state of Washington, where he joined his brother Adam, who had gone to the Pacific coast in the spring of that year. Here the brothers entered five hundred acres of land covered with valuable timber, the tract lying along the Sauk river. They were the first persons who ever remained on the river through the winter. In the fall of 1890 O. J. Mechling returned to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in accordance with the request of his father, and took charge of the home farm, eventually inheriting the old homestead through the terms of the will made by his father. Later he sold this farm, comprising one hundred and forty-four acres, to the Keystone Coal Company. In the spring of 1904 he purchased twenty-five acres of the Conrad Shuey farm for a building site, situated one mile north of the corporate limits of the town. It was in one of the most attractive portions of the county, the rising ground commanding an excellent view of the country. Here he completed the finest country residence in that part of the county. There were also large and substantial outbuildings and it was a model country home, the residence being supplied with every convenience found in city houses.
Mr. Mechling was a Democrat in his political views and he belonged to the Lutheran church, which for several years he served as an official. He was one of the promoters of the Merchants' Trust Company of Greensburg, and was one of the directors of that institution. His business affairs were managed with keen discernment and capability so characteristic of the family.
