He was killed in action during the Civil war, in one of the big battles in Virginia.

Cemetery records of the McMillen Cemetery record the burial of Daniel A. McMillen, 1837-Feb 23, 1865. He was a member of Co. K, 4th PA Cavalry; died from wounds received in the Battle of Hatcher's Run.
