He was educated at the Western University, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Theological Seminary, of Allegheny, in 1846. He received license to preach in 1846, thereafter followed the profession, and had charge of churches in Fayette and Westmoreland counties, and then for more than twenty years of the U. P. Church, of Elizabeth, Allegheny County.
