General Notes: Husband - James Steele

The Steele family of Franklin, Pennsylvania, descend from James Steel, of Carrickmacross, Ireland, whose descendants are found spelling the name both with and without the final "e."

He was born in Castle Blaney, near Carrick Macross, Ireland, and emigrated to America after the Steel Boy insurrection (1772), landing in Philadelphia, stopped on the eastern side of the mountains at that Scotch-Irish hive in Cumberland, now Franklin County, and moved westward, about 1773, settling on land in Sewickley manor, now Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, about the time of the formation of Westmoreland County. Here he bought land from the Penns, and became an important land owner in his day - land that became part of the Connellsville coking coal region. He became an agitator for freedom, was a member of Mount Pleasant Association formed to protect this western country, was three years in the Revolutionary army, took the oath of allegiance required by all foreign born citizens, before Hugh Martin, a justice of Westmoreland County, March 3, 1777, and served with his brothers-in-law, Robert and Andrew Donaldson (who were both killed in battle), in the campaign of the Jerseys. [HWC 1906 II, 23]

He was a native of Belfast, Ireland, who immigrated to America about 1778 and settled on the Sewickley creek, in Mt. Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he took up five hundred acres of land and where he remained until his death. He was a whig and belonged to the Presbyterian church. [HBCWC, 699]

Four hundred fifty acres of his original purchase were handed down through successive generations and in 1911 were owned by a great-grandson, Joseph W. Steel.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth McMasters
