General Notes: Husband - John Gilmore McMarlin

After attending the public and the high schools at Mars, Pennsylvania, and at Butler, he graduated at Duff's Business College, Pittsburgh. With the exception of one year, he was then identified with banking throughout his business career. He started with the Butler Savings Bank, as bookkeeper, and remained one year, and in 1891 he came to the Butler County National Bank as teller; in 1900 he was made cashier of that bank, and later vice-president.
Mr. McMarlin was a Republican in his political convictions, and for a number of years he held the position of president of the Butler School Board.
During the World War, Mr. McMarlin was one of the most active workers in the various Liberty Loan drives; and he was an efficient leader in Red Cross and Young Men's Christian Association work, as well as one of the "four-minute" speakers, for which service he received the United States Government certificate. He was a member of the Sons of Veterans, the Kiwanis Club, the Board of Commerce, and the board of sessions of the United Presbyterian Church.

He received the early part of his general education in his native community and later completed this part of his studies in the public and private schools of Butler, Pennsylvania. He then enrolled at Duff's Commercial College in Pittsburgh, later known as Duff's Iron City College, and after finishing his training began his career. A year later, in 1888, he joined the Butler Savings Bank as bookkeeper and in 1891 left to become teller for the Butler County National Bank. He was appointed cashier of this institution in 1900, and eventually was made vice-president. When the Butler County National absorbed the Union National, and the Butler County Trust Company, to form the Butler County National Bank and Trust Company, he maintained his official connections.
For a number of years he was president of the Butler School Board and during the first World War was one of the most efficient and enthusiastic supporters of all movements designed to aid the cause, among them the Red Cross and the Young Men's Christian Association. He also was a "four minute" speaker and received acknowledgment from the United States Government for the services he rendered. He was a member of the Butler Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, the Bankers Club of Pittsburgh, the Sons of Veterans, and the board of sessions of the United Presbyterian Church. In politics he was a Republican. [ASWP, 77]
