He was reared and educated in his native township. He conducted a hotel in East Hickory, Forest County, Pennsylvania, for five years, also operating for a time his father's grist-mill at that place. He located in Tionesta in 1887, where he began a grocery business. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and of the P. O. S. of A.; in politics he was a Republican.
