General Notes: Husband - Samuel McKinney

His father, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, emigrated from the North of Ireland and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he reared a family of which Samuel was one of the older members. Samuel enlisted for service in the war of 1812, and volunteered on board the American squadron which Commodore Perry led to victory on Lake Erie September 10, 1813. In compliment to his patriotism and bravery on that occasion he was awarded a silver medal by the legislature of Pennsylvania in 1819, which, with the letter of Governor William Findlay, conveying the thanks of the government in compliance with the directions of the legislature, was long preserved as a valued family heirloom. At that time he was a resident of the Nittanny valley, Centre County, where he farmed and operated a fulling mill. In 1833 he removed to Cranberry township, Venango County, and secured two hundred acres of land near the village of Salem City. There he passed the remainder of his life.

Iron ore abounded in many parts of Cranberry township, and during the time of the furnaces, the mines gave employment to many men. Some of the principal mines in those days were located on the land owned at present by the heirs of Samuel McKinney, Esq., which were in operation as early as the year 1825. [HVC 1879, 584]

He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Centre County, and was residing there when the War of 1812 broke out, in which struggle he enlisted in the service of his county. He first enlisted in the infantry service, but afterward volunteered in the naval service on the lakes, at a time when men were greatly needed in that department, and took part in the great battle of Lake Erie, which perpetuates in history the name of Commodore Perry, and hands down to the descendents of all who participated, the inscription upon the roll of honor in one of the chief events of American national existence. Mr. McKinney was one of the last survivors of the Pennsylvanians who participated in that engagement. For his gallantry on this occasion he received the thanks of the government, and was presented with a silver medal, which is now a valued memento in the possession of his children. The following is a copy of the letter of thanks received from the Governor of Pennsylvania.
"COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA,
"Harrisburg, Nov. 19th, 1819.
"Sir: In compliance with the directions of the Legislature of this Commonwealth, I have the pleasure of conveying to you the thanks of the government for the noble and gallant manner in which you volunteered on board the American squadron on Lake Erie, under the command of the illustrious Perry; and also of presenting to you a silver medal of fine workmanship, in compliment of your patriotism and bravery in the celebrated victory over a superior British force on the 10th of September, 1813. And I take this occasion to add the testimony of my sincere accordance with the patriotic and grateful sentiments of the Legislature toward you, as one of the citizens of Pennsylvania who distinguished themselves in that memorable conflict.
"I am, sir, with great respect, yours.
"Wm. Findlay."
To SAMUEL MCKINNEY, of the County of Centre.
On his return from the War of 1812, he passed through Venango County, and afterward decided to make it his future home. He accordingly removed here with his family in 1833, where he passed the remainder of his life.
