He was the valedictorian of his class of the Titusville, Pennsylvania, High School, from which he graduated in 1886. He was graduated from Princeton University in 1891, and from the New York Law School in 1893. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1894, and then began to practice his profession in New York City. He was a member of the University Club of New York, Princeton Club, New York Bar Association, Larchmont Yacht Club, Turalie Club of Canada, and various other clubs.
