He was educated at the public schools of Allegheny County. He held the office of auditor of the township for many years, and was engaged as general agent for D. M. Osborne & Co., of Auburn, New York, for Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia for many years; also for George L. Squiers & Co., of Buffalo, New York. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of West Elizabeth.

He had four children with his first wife; only one was still living in 1889.
The source states he had four children with his second wife, but gives five names.
