He left Pennsylvania for Iowa when a young man, and in 1919, at the age of eighty-five years, was living practically retired on his ranch at St. Onge, South Dakota, after an exciting and adventurous career. As scout, Indian fighter, cattle grower and protector of the ranchmen’s interests he became widely known in his section of the west, helping to administer order and justice in the only way possible in the early days and experiencing many narrow escapes.
