He was born on the old family homestead near Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools and in the autumn of 1898 entered Yale College, where he pursued a four-year course, graduating from that institution in 1902. He then took up the study of law, taking a regular course in the law department of the Western Pennsylvania University, from which he was graduated and admitted to the bar of Allegheny County in 1906. He entered the law office of Langfith & McIntosh. His home was at Wilkinsburg; he was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Wilkinsburg. Politically he was a Republican, and in church relations was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Wilkinsburg.
