General Notes: Husband - John McKain

He was educated at the common schools, and at the age of fifteen years left home and began to build a fortune for himself, by going to work as a brakeman on the Bessemer Railroad, which he followed for a year and then went to the great oil fields of Bradford, Pennsylvania, where he was employed at dressing and sharpening tools for the numerous oil wells. He left there and as the “boss,” laid a pipe line for oil from Hilliards, Pennsylvania, to Cleveland, Ohio. After this was finished, he returned to the oil fields, at Washington, Pennsylvania, and for twenty-one years was employed, first as a driller and then as an oil producer. In 1900 he located in Grove City, and in 1905 located on a farm, consisting of one hundred and ten acres, known as the old Banks farm, just west of Grove City, where he then followed farming.
