General Notes: Husband - Sheshbazzar Bentley

On the 8th day of May, 1777, Sheshbazzar Bentley, of New Castle, Delware, purchased of Baltzer Shillins, of Redstone Settlement, in consideration of four hundred pounds, "one tract of land containing three improvements and ten hundred and fifty acres, except what was cut off by arbitration for Matthew Laughlin, supposed not to exceed three acres with all the improvements thereon, situated and lying upon Pigeon Creek." A portion of this tract he received a warrant for March 4, 1785. It was surveyed to him December 21st the same year, and was named "The Review," containing four hundred and thirty-two acres.

He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he learned the trade of millwright, which he followed in both that and Washington counties. In Chester County he was married, and had one child. Afterward he came with his little family to Washington County, a wagon being their mode of conveyance, in which they brought all their chattels. They crossed into the county through the river at Monongahela, and for the first night camped out near where the fair grounds were later located. They then proceeded up Pigeon creek until they arrived at a point where Mr. Bentley established a mill site and built the first mill on the creek. On an adjoining hill he put up for himself and family a log cabin, in which they lived some years, and then erected a hewed log house, where he passed the remainder of his pioneer life. He was a Democrat in politics, and in religious faith, a member of the Society of Friends.

He [Hance Bentley] was a miller by trade, at a very early period came from Virginia to Washington County, Pennsylvania, in search of a suitable location for a mill, and spent his first night there camping in the woods on Pigeon Creek in Somerset, later Carroll, Township, where he subsequently erected a log mill and a log cabin. The country was at that time entirely without cultivation, and was still inhabited by the Indians. Here he engaged in milling during the remainder of his life, and later erected two houses, the second one being a large stone building in which he was residing at the time of his death.
