He was president of the Miami University, at Oxford, and professor of philosophy at the University of Virginia.
He and his brother, Alexander H., are known to posterity as the originators of the famous McGuffey series of school books. William was the author of the first four McGuffey Readers, and Alexander H., of the two other readers and one speller.
