He was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and came to Beaver County with his parents when a child. He was educated in the common schools and Greersburg Academy.
He was a farmer and owned 120 acres of land, ninety of which his father purchased. Many improvements in the way of buildings, etc., were made. He was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church; in politics a Republican.
