He lived with his father until the latter's death, having gone to Ohio with him in 1850. He learned tanning with his brother John in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, and worked at the trade until the outbreak of the Civil War of 1861, when he enlisted and served throughout the war. During his service he was commissioned first lieutenant. He was severely wounded.
He served a term as county treasurer of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, after the war, and was for several years the proprietor of a boot and shoe store. He was later engaged in the lumber business.
