He was born in Venango County, Pennsylvania, where he was brought up. He moved to Crawford County in 1867, locating on a farm of ninety-seven acres. He and his wife were members of the Cochranton United Presbyterian Church, and politically he stood firm in the Democratic faith.
At the time of his death, he was reputed to be the wealthiest man in East Fairfield Township.
