He was a harnessmaker and farmer.

He was born on the old family homestead and retained the original site where the first cabin was built, the spring and the old orchard. Apple trees cut there in 1876 showed over one hundred growth rings. During his life and management, this farm reached the highest state of cultivation and he was offered $100.00 per acre for it.
