He was born on a farm in Irwin Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and made his home there up to the time of his marriage. In November, 1862, he enlisted, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in Company I, 103d Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, with which he served nine months, being discharged on account of disability. At the time of his marriage he settled in Sandy Creek Township, where he remained several years, during which he served as tax collector for a time, thence removing to Rockland Township. A year later he located in Butler County, near Butler city, in 1876 returning to Rockland Township. Upon his retirement in 1906 he made his home in Franklin. He was successfully engaged in oil production during the greater part of his active career. In politics he supported the Prohibition Party, and he was affiliated with the Good Templars and the Protected Home Circle. His religious connection was with the Church of God, in which he held the office of elder, and he was active in all Christian work. [HVC 1919, 956]
