General Notes: Husband - William Howard McDowell

He was born in Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, and when eleven years old accompanied his parents to the farm near Milroy, where he grew to manhood. After his father's death he removed with his mother to York County, Pennsylvania, and in 1862 enlisted from that county in Company G, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He took part in a number of important engagements, and was with Sherman's army on the march to Atlanta, being assigned to Kilpatrick's division. In September, 1864, while out on a scouting expedition, he was captured by guerrillas, with two of his companions. One of the latter escaped but Mr. McDowell, being wounded, was at the mercy of his captors. After suffering imprisonment in various places he was finally taken to Andersonville Prison, where he died.
