When sixteen years of age, he went to Mercer county, there learned the blacksmith's trade, and followed that occupation for a period of forty years. After a short time spent in the oil fields of Armstrong county, he settled in Venango township, Butler county.

He had two children with his first wife, only one was still living in 1895. Three children with his second wife.
