He was educated in his native county, and became a farmer.
He and his wife were members of Mount Carmel Presbyterian church. He was a Democrat, and was elected county auditor. In 1849 he was elected county commissioner, in 1853 and again in 1878, being the first man elected to that office a second term. He was a school director for over twenty years.
