General Notes: Husband - George Williams McDonald

He was reared to the invigorating discipline of the old home farm, in the work and management of which he early became associated with his father, and he received his preliminary educational training in the public schools of his native place. After leaving home he was engaged in mining operations for ten years. He came to Clarion County, Pennsylvania, in 1879 and for the ensuing three years worked a farm for an uncle, from whom he subsequently purchased it. In 1883 he returned to Armstrong County and bought sixty-five acres of land in Madison township. In 1887 he went to Climax, where he resided for eight years and where he was employed in a brickyard furnace, during the first four years as engineer and during the remainder of the time as foreman. In 1894 he purchased an estate of one hundred and ten acres in Porter township and there resided. In 1901 all the buildings except the residence were burned and he replaced them with modern structures. He bred Guernsey cattle, Percheron horses and Poland China hogs. He was financially interested in the Dexter Gas Company beginning in 1900, the year of its organization. In 1900 he drew the plans and erected the St. Charles Brick Works, in which concern he had considerable money invested. On November 13, 1912, he moved to Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, to engage in the manufacture of a coffee substitute known as “Amber Hue.” The Amber Hue Company consisted of R. W. Amalong, A. S. Huey, G. W. McDonald and R. R. McDonald, his eldest son, all of Pitcairn, Pennsylvania. Mr. McDonald was a business man of marked executive ability and tremendous energy. In politics he was an uncompromising Republican, and while he never held office of any description he was deeply and sincerely interested in community affairs and contributed liberally of his aid and influence in support of all matters projected for the good of the general welfare. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in the work of which he took an active interest. [GPHAV, 627]
