He was of Scotch-Irish parentage; settled on a farm near Buena Vista, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he died. He had seven sons and two daughters, of whom John B. was the second. He was a boat-builder and afterward a farmer; he served several years as a road commissioner.
