He was reared on the farm, receiving his education in the common schools and at the academy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1869.
He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church at Carlisle. He was a Democrat in politics; for four years was school director in the district. He was owner of a well improved farm of 140 acres.
