General Notes: Husband - James Titus Baker

When a young man of eighteen years he left home and began the battle of life for himself, working first in the coal mines, and the money he received from this occupation he gave to his father. On the 4th of October, 1864, he enlisted for service in the Civil war, joining Company D, Two Hundred and Eleventh Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, entering the ranks for a term of one year. On the 2d of April, 1865, he was at Fort Steadman in the charge against Petersburg, and after his honorable discharge from the army he returned home and resumed work in the coal mines. He later spent one year in Illinois, also worked in the mines in the Hocking Valley, Ohio, and returning to Sharon mined in the Kimberley mines, Rankin Banks, and during a number of years was mine superintendent for Kimberley & Dunham. Removing then to Brookfield, Ohio, he was mine superintendent there for twenty-six years and more, and then returning once more to Sharon became engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a member of Hartford Lodge No. 19, F. & A. M., Hartford, Ohio; of Sharon Lodge No. 347, I. O. O. F. since 1866; of Shenango Encampment; a member of the P. H. C. and of Sharon Post of the Grand Army of the Republic. He and his wife were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon.
