He was born at Manor Station, and at the age of eighteen went to Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed in connection with the building business during the remainder of his life. He died at an early age, his death being the result of a cold contracted while assisting to extinguish a fire in the city of Greensburg.

Another source states that he was a printer by occupation.
