He attended the Sheakleyville schools until he was seventeen years of age; later became a pupil at the Fredonia Institute and taught at Mattoon, IL, for about a year. He then returned to Sheakleyville, PA, where he learned the tinner's trade, making a specialty of roofing. In connection with farming, he followed this avocation with good financial results, his expert workmanship and honorable dealings both combining to give him a high standing as a reliable and progressive workman. In his more extended relations, he was an active member of Sheakleyville Lodge No. 592, I. O. O. F., in which he held the position of right supporter; was a strong Republican, having served one term on the school board and three terms as town clerk; and also identified with the board work of the Baptist church.
