He was born on the family farm in South Strabane township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, which for many years was his home, and received a subscription-school education. He was a Democrat in politics, and held the offices of road supervisor and school director. In religion he was an adherent of the Presbyterian Church at Pigeon Creek.
