General Notes: Husband - Nehemiah Lewis

He deeded land at Ashford, Connecticut, probably received by gift or inheritance from his father, but did not live at Ashford. His sons lived at Gloucester, Rhode Island. No record of their birth has been found in the incomplete vital records of Rhode Island, but in the census of 1774 we find as heads of families in Gloucester, Nehemiah, James, Vinten, Obadiah and Arnold. Arnold and Nehemiah and perhaps the others were sons of Nehemiah. According to the census of 1790 there were two Nehemiah Lewis families in New York state, one at Stephentown, having two males under sixteen and three females, the other at Hampton, Washington County, where this Nehemiah and his descendants lived. His family then consisted of two males over sixteen, two under that age and no females. Hence he was then a widower, but he married again apparently late in life, for his widow Amy died October 23, 1808, aged ninety-seven years. This record is taken from a gravestone at Low Hampton, near the Vermont line. The family in 1790 probably included some of his grandchildren, as his son Nehemiah was dead.
