He was born on the old farm in Independence township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, which continued to be his home. He attended the district schools, and assisted in the farm work. He always resided on the home place, and followed general farming and stock raising, being especially successful with the latter business. In politics he was an active member of the Democratic party, and was called upon to fill various township offices.
