General Notes: Husband - John McClay

Canton Twp, Washington Co, PA

He was born on the home farm in Canton township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and passed his early youth on the farm, receiving a very limited education in the primitive schools of the period. [CBRWC, 652]

He was a successful business man and carried on farming and stock raising for many years, devoting much attention to the growing of sheep. In his early political life he was a Whig and later became a strong advocate of the abolition of slavery. During the Civil War he lent his support heartily to the preservation of the Union. In early days he was a member of the Covenanter Church but later was identified for years with the North Buffalo United Presbyterian Church, in which he was an elder.

He was for many years a director in the First National Bank of Washington.
