He was educated in his native county, where he was a farmer all his life. The old farm consisted of 150 acres, of which he retained one hundred, situated between a new steelworks and a glass-factory.
He took an active interest in church work, and was an elder of the Presbyterian Church; politically he was a whig, and later a republican.
