His early life was passed with his grandfather, George Mealy, who moved from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to Washington County. He passed his early youth in attending to the farm duties on his grandfather's place, and during the winter season went to the neighboring schools. When fifteen years of age he was apprenticed to James Shannon, a shoemaker, and thereafter was engaged in that vocation, always recognized as one of the best workmen of Claysville. When twenty-two years of age he began business for himself, and opened a shop.
He was appointed postmaster of Claysville in 1845, by the administration of James K. Polk, which position he occupied sixteen years. In politics he was an active member of the Democratic party. From early youth he was a zealous member of the Presbyterian Church.

He was a very early settler in the section of Washington County, Pennsylvania, in which he lived, and he cleared the land which he acquired and developed it into a productive farm.
