General Notes: Husband - Joshua J. McCandless

He lived on the home farm all his life with the exception of two years. When he started out for himself he went into debt $4,000, for his fifty acres of land. After the death of his father he bought out the other heirs and eventually owned 262 acres. The home of this family of Franklin Township was built in 1888, and other buildings were erected in 1894. He stocked his farm with fine cattle and owned expensive farm machinery, all this obtained only by his own exertions. He kept about nine cows, as he had a large butter trade among private customers at Butler. He took a very active interest in agricultural progress in his section and was an active member of Mount Chestnut Grange, No. 404. He and his wife belonged to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, of which he was a trustee.
