General Notes: Husband - Alexander Kerr McCandless

He was reared on his father's farm and obtained a good common school education, continuing on the farm and working the land until his marriage in 1864. He also conducted a store at Pleasant Valley up to 1878. In 1880 he went to Grove City and opened a general store, continuing in the mercantile business up to 1886, in which year he closed up his business and with J. P. Locke as partner, operated two years as the Grove City flouring mills. He sold out and in 1890 re-entered mercantile pursuits, continuing up to 1906, when he again sold out and retired from active business. He commenced in a small way, and what he possesses he has secured through careful management. In early days he ran a huckster's wagon, driving to Pittsburgh and trading for his goods. He kept this up for about ten years.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church since he was eighteen years of age, and was elected a ruling elder in 1868. He became clerk of the Grove City Presbyterian church session. He was one of the organizers of the People's National Bank of Grove City, and was its president at one time.
