He was 13 years old when he landed at Charleston, South Carolina, with his parents and siblings. They had come from Ireland.
He worked his way across the Carolinas, up through Maryland, up the Susquehanna Valley to Belmont Forge, then to Huntingdon County, PA, thence to Perry Township, Clarion County.
