He was a native of Scotland who came to America and settled in Salem township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, near where the town of Delmont was later located.

He was a farmer at Harvey's Cross Roads in Salem township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he lived for many years. He was a man of means and an extensive property holder.
