General Notes: Husband - James A. McAteer

He came from county Antrim, Ireland, direct to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when a boy of sixteen, arriving with less than a dollar in his possession.
His elder brother, Alexander, was then employed by the Adams Express Company there, and the young McAteer procured work with that company for a time. Eventually he saved enough from his limited salary to open a small retail grocery, gradually increasing his business until, under the firm name of Strauss and McAteer, a wholesale grocery business was established. Later he bought out his partner and still later took his two sons into partnership with him, under the caption of James A. McAteer and Sons, one of the largest enterprises of the kind in Pittsburgh.
